Periodontal Maintenance

More adults over 35 years of age lose teeth to gum diseases than from cavities. In fact, three out of four adults are affected by gum disease in their lifetime. That is staggering! The best way to prevent periodontal disease is to maintain good dental hygiene habits (brushing and flossing) every day.

Periodontal disease is caused by bacterial plaque, a colorless film that sticks to your teeth and gum line. Over time, if that film is not removed, it will harden and become a rough substance called tartar. If it is not removed, the bacteria found in plaque and tartar will irritate your gums causing them to separate from the tooth, creating pockets; this will let in even more bacteria that will lead to tooth decay and loss.

Other important factors affecting the health of your gums include:

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Stress
  • Clenching and grinding teeth
  • Medication
  • Poor nutrition
